HorseSpace for Foster Carers

A FREE support group once a month for a couple of hours to provide foster carers some well-deserved relaxation, fun, and support. HorseAccord has received funding from a family who wished to remain anonymous to facilitate a monthly carers group focusing on self-care, peer support, mental health and wellbeing. HorseAccord recognise that carers often forsake their own health, interests and creativity in order to focus their attention on those they are caring for. This often leaves the carer feeling burnout, vulnerable to stress, managing their own mental and physical health problems, and feelings of despair and isolation. The support group provides a peaceful environment for carers to meet and spend time with others experiencing similar challenges, as well as improving self-care, wellness, coping strategies, relaxation, and mindfulness through participation in group equine assisted activities. This is an open group and activities will be planned around the horse’s reflective behaviour on the day to meet the presenting challenges of the participants. By offering a regular supportive and safe space the benefits of carers attending the group will extend to their homes and family life. There is no pressure and fun is at the top of the agenda. We start with a check in and a cuppa then spend time out in nature with the horses engaging in fun ground-based activities followed by sharing stories over morning tea. The group is FREE with a gold coin donation for morning tea.
